plan a modern wedding in the middle of the country

Over the past year or so, I’ve seen these adorable push cakes popping up everywhere. Created by Meringue Bake Shop, these individual cakes are basically a cupcake packaged in clear plastic tubes in which the bottom pushes up, like the sherbet push-pops I remember having as a kid. Many bake shops are now offering these as options, so be sure to ask if your baker makes these if they interest you for a wedding cake or dessert bar option. You can customize with cake/frosting flavor and color combinations, as well as with monogrammed stickers or any other design.

Keep in mind, if these feel too informal for your actual wedding, they would be great for showers or other pre-wedding parties!

Cream cheese icing to be specific.  And, the only cake that is a true match for cream cheese icing? Red Velvet, of course.

We fully intend on making sure one layer of our cake is red velvet.  The Pilot isn’t much of a fan, but, man, how can you not love it?

As for the other layers…we have plenty of time to think about that.

In lieu of a wedding cake, why not serve an array of pies?!

I think this idea is great, especially if you and your significant other are not big cake fans.  And, you can serve several different flavors/options to keep all of your guests happy.  Your guests will walk away remembering that tasteful element of your wedding!

Remember to include the things you like in your wedding – even if that means opting for wedding pies over a cake!

Your wedding cake is a great way to add a splash of color, a bit of fun or to make a statement at your reception.  The best part is when your cake is unlike something that most of your guests probably haven’t seen, like this one.

Most of the time, brides opt to have an intricate design on the sides of their cake, or maybe on just one layer. This particular couple went a different route, and had a design placed on the top of each layer. It adds a splash of color, but is still a very chic cake. And, even better, the cake shop based the design off of their stationary.

Probably not the post you’re expecting.

I have a strong affinity towards cakes that have different sized layers.  And I’m not talking about your normal 10 inch round and eight inch round, I’m talking height.

Having your wedding cake made like the one below is a great way to add height to your cake if you are having a smaller one made.  You just need to ask your baker to make smaller rounds (say six and 8 inches) and stack them taller.

Plus, having the layers be different heights really adds great visual interest and sets your cake apart from a traditional wedding cake (if you’re going for that look).

And, as a side note, wedding cakes with color is another great way to add visual interest at your reception!

I love the idea of displaying your wedding cake (or cakes) on fun and colorful cake platters.  Here are just a few of my favorites!

I’d love to have our cakes displayed on one of these, but we have yet to get that far into the planning! Fingers crossed that it’ll work out.

How did you display your cake?

Groom’s cake are a bit of a Southern tradition, so us Midwesterners and any of you West Coasters and New Englanders may not be too familiar with the idea.

Here’s a little background (thanks to the Wedding Channel):  The Groom’s cake is an American South tradition, intended to be a gift from the bride to the groom.  It can often take the shape of just about anything, or come in the form of a cheesecake, chocolate cake or pie (amongst other things).

More recently, the idea of fun cakes that reflect a hobby or profession of the Groom have gained popularity, thanks in part to shows like Ace of Cakes.

(Had to give a nod to the FI’s occupation, of course).

I love the idea of featuring something different for the groom’s cake if you are doing one. Something other than cake. It gives guests an alternative to cake, because let’s face it. Not everyone likes cake (not sure how that is possible).

I heart croquembouches. A lot. Probably because I like puff pastries. A lot.

BUT, how can you not love this twist on the croquembouche?

Um, heck yes. Donut croquembouche alternative. They had a cake and the donut tree-cake.  How awesome?!

We keep tossing the idea around of having a grooms cake, but that’s a lot of cake at one wedding!  Are you going to have a grooms cake? Does your groom want something different or a fun-shaped cake?
