plan a modern wedding in the middle of the country

I Am thrilled to post a Minneapolis wedding, especially one as gorgeous as this! The Semple Mansion is a beautiful venue that offers so many different options for photos. From the mansion itself to the grounds that surround it, these natural backdrops were a perfect accent to the soft blush tones of the bouquets and romantic gold tones of the bridal party attire. However, what I love even more than this timeless venue is the truly contagious smile of the bride, Kate. A beautiful smile, a beautiful couple and a truly breathtaking, beautiful wedding day.

My two favorite words from Mandi’s wedding day recap? “Simple elegance.” Their wedding was just that – nothing crazy over-the-top – just simple. Beautiful. And, fun. The main focus was friends and family – they knew that if that was a top priority, the other pieces would fall nicely into place.

From the Bride:
The entire wedding planning process was grounded by our intial thoughts for our wedding day “Simple elegance” which I think we followed through on. I had drooled over wedding after weddings in stacks of bridal magazines, including MN Bride and over wedding blog after wedding blog and found so much inspiration… every day I had new ideas but Joe was the one that kept bringing me back to reality and another important piece… our budget!!! We did lots of DIY and although I can’t say we loved every moment of long grueling nights of invitation prep and mailings… we tried our very best to make it a fun adventure, one that we knew would be over in the blink of an eye! Our family and our guests were the main focus of our reception as well… each and every one of them had helped us to get where we stood that very day, we wanted them to know that and to enjoy themselves! We had guests from all over the world, Joe’s uncle even made it from Korea!! My something old and borrowed was my grandma’s wedding ring that was tied into my bouquet, that way she would be with me each moment of a very important day I wish she could’ve been with us. Not a single thing went wrong on our wedding day… doing a chunk of DIY projects and budget friendly ways around most we could… Joe finally gave in to my want of a “day of coordinator”, which made everything seamless!!! Aside from Joe and I appreciating this splurge, our families even noticed how nice this added touch was. One of our favorite parts of the big day was our first sight… Joe stood with his back facing me on a bridge and each step I took toward him, my heart beat was faster and faster… finally as soon as I got to tap him on the shoulder and turned to see me… everything seemed perfect and all the butterflies of the big day went away for the both of us. From that point on throughout the rest of the day… we had huge perma-smil es glued to our faces. We truly couldn’t have asked for a more beautiful day!

Even though this is just a style shoot, the simplistic rock n’ roll nature of the details and attire have me jumping for joy. It’s music to my ears (and just about any wedding vendor) when a couple embraces their personal style and lets it shine through in their wedding. And, to be honest, it shouldn’t be any other way. Thank you, Dette, for sharing!

From the Photographer:
This styled wedding shoot was inspired by by the idea of an alternative couple wanting to have a somewhat off-beat, yet simple and intimate wedding, in a very unique location. That venue was a gorgeous art gallery in the trendy warehouse district of Northeast Minneapolis {Anita Sue Kolman Gallery}.

We combined this one-of-a-kind location with a modern bridal dress {short + silver sequins!} and bridesmaids dresses in a muted gray tone. We added lots of vintage jewelry {paired with modern leather/studded accessories}, custom-made edgy veils/head pieces, bright spring flowers, matching invitations, French macaroons and some really easy DIY table decor {inexpensive thrift store finds of vases and candle holders, spray painted in our color palette of purples and blacks}. Think rock-n-roll chic meets “New Girl” theme.

Gina Zeidler

Minneapolis, Minnesota

I’m behind thrilled to introduce today’s vendor. She’s a dear friend, and someone whom I look up to on a regular basis. I was lucky (and blessed) enough to meet her when I attended Making Things Happen back in December 2010. Her zest for life and authenticity are magical. And, the best part is that her personality – authenticity and all – are obvious in every photo she takes. The Midwest is lucky to have her (but know that she loves to travel for weddings, too).

Where are you located and do you travel for weddings?

I am located in Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN. I often travel for my weddings also, about 50% of my weddings are destination!

How would you describe your photography style?

My style is Real, Clean and Crisp images that define who each of my clients are.

How did you get interested in photography? Did you start out in weddings?

I got started in photography because I loved scrapbooking (yes I am nerdy) and bought a better camera to take better photos. Then it snowballed into shooting 10-30 weddings a summer. Now I shoot a unique 15-20 a year.

What do you think sets you apart from other photographers in the industry?

What sets me apart is my client experience and just the fun that we have. I am not a serious, move your head here, pose there photographer. I use movement in my images. We laugh. We laugh a lot. I want my clients to know that I want to be there every step of the way as a resource for questions, ideas and support. Lastly, it is my hearts desire for your photographs to represent YOU as a couple. What you do for fun. What your life is like. I work hard to pull that into your images and create timeless pieces for you to have on your walls.

What is your favorite thing to photograph?

My favorite thing to photograph is when my couples walk out of the ceremony and have 5 minutes to themselves. I think this time is SO precious and it’s SO beautiful. We often don’t slow down enough to drink in the moments. Especially on the crazy awesome and busy wedding day. I make it a point to offer opportunities for my Bride’s and Grooms to take snippets away from the big and crazy party and focus on the most important part…..them actually becoming husband and wife that day.

What other hobbies and activities make your heart sing? What do you do for fun?

For fun I love Colorado. I love being on a lake on a boat. I love dancing. I love mentoring and encouraging others. I love God and quiet time in prayer. I love making others laugh and styling photo shoots. I love my cute pup and my amazing husband. Clean design and Anthropologie fire me up!

P.S. That adorable couple above is Emily from Southern Weddings Magazine and her fiance. How cute are they, right?!

Love knows no age is in fact a true statement. Not only did I enjoy perusing through all of the photos from this wedding because of the holiday decor, but I loved the couple, Tami and Clayton. The warmth and love in their eyes radiates in these photos. And, it reminds me that love is beautiful, always and forever.

From the Planner, Rita:
Timeless, classic and warm was the overall feeling of Tami & Clayton wedding.   The Minneapolis Club was the perfect venue to host their ceremony and reception with its dark, rich wood.  White and red flowers blended beautifully accented by a lot of candlelight  and twinkle lights to bring the element of warmth they desired.     Because it was a second marriage for both, they opted to have a small, intimate ceremony with a larger dinner reception.   Most important to them was being surrounded by their family and friends on their very special day.

For the record, I love a snowy wedding. I wish more couples would tie the knot in the Winter. Sure, it’s a little cold, but that white fluffy stuff makes for a beautiful backdrop.

Melissa and Matt tied the knot in February (brrr), but they looked so cute the entire time! Melissa’s mom even made mittens for the bride and her bridesmaids (which are adorable). She even donned a pair of purple Ugg’s for those snowy shots, and a pretty pair of ruffly heels for the ceremony and reception.

From the Bride:
I used the website The Knot to plan our wedding by researching my vendors and contacting them. If vendors didn’t have a website or any sort of price range on their website they would be eliminated immediately (I can’t help it – I am all about convience!). I scoured Etsy for design ideas. And, The Wellstead gave me a packet of vendors brides have used in the past, which is how we found our florist, 101 Market.

The two things that I felt were most important were our videographer and photo booth. We didn’t spend much on the videographer but it was one of the best things we did. And, my husband and I love looking at our photo booth scrap book. It totally cracks us up.

I loved our reception site because they managed everything. I brought in all of my centerpeices, extra ribbon, candy buffet items, pictures, guest book and more on the Thursday before our wedding and they set it all up. I was very laid back during this whole process so I let them decorate however they wanted to and it turned out beautifully.

We held the rehearsal dinner the Thursday before our wedding so Friday could be filled with nails, massages and lunch with a bunch of friends. The day of our wedding was very relaxing and we didn’t have to worry about one thing, which we loved!

Austin (bride numero uno) sent over this adorable engagement session of her and her fiance just the other day. It is filled with so much laughter and love. And, I can’t help but love it even more for that.
