plan a modern wedding in the middle of the country

This traditional church wedding in Milwaukee has gorgeous vintage details and colors: Peach and cream, a refurbish mother’s dress, romantic hanging votives, and unique bridesmaid’s dresses. But hands down, the best detail of this entire wedding is the genuine perma-smile on the groom’s face. It is so evident how joyful and glad he is to be there with his equally sweet, yet more quietly excited bride.

From the Photographer:

Melinda and Patrick wed on a warm late fall day in Wisconsin. Their day was infused with personal touches, vintage, rustic and modern details and had an overall laid-back styling. Mindy’s dress was fashioned from her mother’s vintage wedding gown, reworked to fit her modern/vintage taste. The day was simply perfect!

From the Bride-to-be:
This is our final year at Marquette University before graduating and getting married. So, we decided to meet on campus just before classes resumed and found some beautiful haunts for our engagement pictures. We wanted to celebrate our love and document some time in one of our favorite places before getting married and taking the next steps in life!

I love that this couple chose their wedding date to fall on their 5 year anniversary. I love that this couple had a fall wedding but didn’t incorporate the typical fall wedding colors. I love that this couple got married in Wisconsin. I love that this couple shopped at thrift, antique and second hand shops to gather their wedding decor. I love that this couple incorporated a ‘fall’ themed wedding dessert. But what I love most is that this couple capped off their ceremony with a secret handshake. I think I’ve made it clear how much I love this wedding – from the color scheme to the flowers, the love in the photos and delicate decor, not to mention the adorable cardigan, I just love it all.

From the bride:
We met in the fall (5 years to the day of our wedding) and definitely wanted a fall wedding – but without the traditional autumn colors. With a lakefront ceremony, incorporating colors we liked more – blues & greens – worked perfectly. I had always loved the blue mason jars but wasn’t sure how difficult they would be to find – we stopped in every thrift/antique/secondhand store we passed and hit a few gold mines. We also discovered Fiestaware teacups and other glassware – and vintage Pez dispensers for our guests! Early on, I thought about incorporating apples into the overall look – caramel apples (so fall!) on the dessert table and dark red apples elsewhere. They went well with the deep red dahlias I envisioned (and got!) being the accent to all of our blues & greens. The florals were rounded out by the most lovely collection of succulents a bride could ask for. We wanted our ceremony to be personal & meaningful and asked my brother to officiate, our moms to read, and friends to sing and play music. We capped it off by sealing our vows with a secret handshake.

So many love stories now are about how the couple finally found each other, but not this one. Lisa and Tony knew each other for a long time, and eventually decided to choose each other for life. Getting married in the town where they grew up together was a traditional choice, but they definitely added their own personal touches for a fun, elegant day.

From the Photographer:

Lisa & Tony grew up together and their parents are great friends. Lisa discovered that her long time friend would be the perfect companion, love, and husband for her future. They decided to celebrate their I Dos back in Milwaukee instead of Minneapolis where they live. A little bit of distance can do great things for one’s appreciation of hometown. Lisa and Tony’s design for their wedding was a delicious mix of all things home grown Milwaukee and seriously classy, big city, easy elegance. They are a couple who understands that sentimental fun can mix perfectly with elegant style to create extremely personal wedding day. The day started with Tony, getting ready on the open air terrace of the Milwaukee Athletic Club’s roof. He donned custom cufflinks while Lisa zipped into an exquisite Vera Wang gown. Her sparkly blue Kate Spade shoes matched the navy calligraphy of their letterpress invitations. The invites weren’t just letterpressed, they also hinted at the night of fun to be had with their electric green edge tinting. Lisa & Tony joined their guests on the Pilot House’s wrap around terrace. The watery blue and bright white details plus calligraphy, great eats and a polka band set the tone for the evening. As a special surprise for Tony, Lisa enlisted the Milwaukee Brewer Sausages to kick off the party and the fireworks.

Dana and Harley’s Wisconsin wedding is simple and classic. That’s what I love most about it. Her beautiful lace gown and the simple flower arrangements in bud vases. Her slate blue shoes (the Badgely Mischka’s that I’m a huge fan of) and flower in her hair are the sweetest of touches. It’s those simple details that can always make a bigger statement.

From the Photographer:
From the day’s start at the old world Pfister to the day’s end at the modern, leather-meet-brandy conservatory at Bacchus, everything about Dana and Harley’s wedding day oozed elegance. Her dress struck me with its lacy, timeless beauty and how she paired it with modern vintage touches of a glass bead belt and crystal cuff. Where Dana was giddy, Harley was cool – throughout the early part of the day I kept seeing him bent over a piece of paper, studying something in hand. It turns out it was the Saturday crossword puzzle and he got most of it complete the last time I checked. Dana & Harley’s reception was the first time I thought I could see myself doing it this way. The guests toasted them in the soft day light of the all-glass conservatory and they danced in an atmosphere more akin to an open air or tented reception. They dined in – well, the dining room, where crisp white linens and dark leather seating were accented with Marius Bell’s ingenious little floral vignettes with mercury glass votives. Instead of the usual 8 person rounds, guests filled booths and 4 tops, aunts next to neighbors, old friends reunited with one another. It was a lot like Dana & Harley took 150 of their favorite people out to a really, really nice dinner. Which is exactly what they wanted – a night to spend with those they cherish, to be toasted and to dance, but really to enjoy one another, intimately and elegantly.

Pam and Jay’s wedding was so full of not just love and fun, but personal elements to really help make their big day about their relationship. Their story, as shared by Heather, the photographer, is the kind that warms your heart – one that reinforces what a great marriage (and wedding) is founded upon.

Heather Cook Elliot Photography

From the Photographer, Heather:
Pam and Jay’s wedding photos tell their story of love, travel, friendship and intensity, and, like Pam’s smile, it’s a big story. Their love story details are sweet and romantic, their history together already rich with vivid places and spaces they’ve explored together. He’s from the Boston area, she from Chicago but they met in the fair city of Milwaukee at Marquette University. Big bodies of water figure prominently in both their histories – his summers on the Cape, her years with Lake Michigan as the defining spacial marker plus a year spent in Ireland, an island after all – meant that we had to go to the lakefront on their wedding day. Turns out, he proposed to her at the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco… Water, water everywhere.

As far as their relationship goes they challenge and sustain one another intellectually…and playfully. But even knowing all that about them I was stunned by the beauty, fun and thoughtfulness that characterized their wedding day. Both Pam and Jay were radiantly joyful all day, the weather and the smiles of their friends perfect mirrors of their happiness. Thoughtful touches like a trolley (in honor of their engagement city), custom cufflinks to celebrate Jay’s old city and his new one, plus dual priests to honor both families (Pam’s Uncle and Jay’s longtime family friend) made my day and their superb taste in cupcakes made my night. (Seriously, months later I can still remember how good the french toast and red velvet cupcakes tasted!) To top it off Pam and Jay hosted one of the best dance parties I’ve seen at a wedding, and yes, even Pam’s uncle the priest cut a rug on the dance floor.

I love a good snowy wedding. Especially when there are big fluffy Charlie Brown Christmas flakes floating in the air. Jane and Patrick were keeping their fingers crossed for a snowy wedding day, and their prayers were answered when Milwaukee not only had snow on the ground, but it also snowed during the day.

Ardent Photography & Unveiled Portraits

From the Photographer:

Jane was hoping for a wintery snow-filled day… if it didn’t happen we would do an “Ever After” session on another day with snow in the forecast. Luckily for Jane and Pat, the forecast for February 26 included the beautiful white confetti they dreamed about. The couple did a “first look” on the rooftop deck of the Hotel Metro. The moments Jane and Patrick shared in privacy were captured in a beautiful even light. What a way to start their wedding day! Jane is an invitation designer, she designed so many amazing things for their wedding… including custom hankies, a pin-up board guest book, a custom cupcake and Jimmie Square stand and a totally amazing folding wedding program. Coverage ended that evening in the midnight hour at The Landmark Lanes. It was so cute to see everyone in their wedding best hitting the lanes for the midnight bowl.

Right off of a Green Bay win (and last week’s Real Wedding), I couldn’t not feature this beautiful Wisconsin wedding from Simply Bloom Photography. The simplistic details, the rustic feel, the bride’s dress? Purely beautiful. And, everyone loves a good Italian feast for the party, right?

Thanks to Christine and Vania of Simply Bloom Photography for letting us feature this wedding. Be sure to check out more photos from the feature post over on Wedding Chicks.

In lieu of a traditional sit-down dinner reception, Jen + Brett treated their guests to a cocktail / appetizer reception. The laid-back atmosphere encourages guests to move around more, and keeps the conversation (and fun) flowing.

The food. Oh, the food. And, yes, those are grilled cheese sandwiches. And, tiny macaroons!

I’m not exactly sure what it is I love about this wedding. The gorgeous couple, the emotion, the details and nod to history, or the fact that it was held at a brewery (my college job was as a tour guide for one of the world’s largest brewers). Jen + Brett wed at Zilber Park, which happens to be right on the grounds of the Pabst Brewery in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The setting truly made for a beautiful backdrop.
