plan a modern wedding in the middle of the country

Cream cheese icing to be specific.  And, the only cake that is a true match for cream cheese icing? Red Velvet, of course.

We fully intend on making sure one layer of our cake is red velvet.  The Pilot isn’t much of a fan, but, man, how can you not love it?

As for the other layers…we have plenty of time to think about that.

Groom’s cake are a bit of a Southern tradition, so us Midwesterners and any of you West Coasters and New Englanders may not be too familiar with the idea.

Here’s a little background (thanks to the Wedding Channel):  The Groom’s cake is an American South tradition, intended to be a gift from the bride to the groom.  It can often take the shape of just about anything, or come in the form of a cheesecake, chocolate cake or pie (amongst other things).

More recently, the idea of fun cakes that reflect a hobby or profession of the Groom have gained popularity, thanks in part to shows like Ace of Cakes.

Patty Cakes

(Had to give a nod to the FI’s occupation, of course).

I love the idea of featuring something different for the groom’s cake if you are doing one. Something other than cake. It gives guests an alternative to cake, because let’s face it. Not everyone likes cake (not sure how that is possible).

I heart croquembouches. A lot. Probably because I like puff pastries. A lot.

BUT, how can you not love this twist on the croquembouche?

Um, heck yes. Donut croquembouche alternative. They had a cake and the donut tree-cake.  How awesome?!

We keep tossing the idea around of having a grooms cake, but that’s a lot of cake at one wedding!  Are you going to have a grooms cake? Does your groom want something different or a fun-shaped cake?

These days it seems as though brides and grooms are opting for something a little bit different for their cake.  Long gone are the traditional cake toppers featuring the bride and groom in static poses.

As weddings become less and less about “old tradition” and more and more about the bride and groom, the nearlyweds are picking fun cake toppers like this, most of which are great Etsy finds, as usual! Etsy never disappoints!

This couple topper is just adorable and simple. It’s a perfect fit for a retro wedding.

Naked Peggies

These little birds are just too cute for words. If this fit with our feel of the wedding, these would so fun. They are such a big hit with a lot of brides.

Le Petit Oiseau

Another big hit are monogrammed or initialed cake toppers like the one below. It’s a more modern way of adorning the cake, rather than with little figurines.

Shea Chic Designs

The FI and I more than likely will not have a cake topper, as we are planning on doing something fun and modern with our cake(s) and playing off of our theme. BUT if we had other ideas in mind, any of the cake toppers above would be so cute.

How will you be topping your cake? Or are you going traditional with an array of real or sugar flowers?
