landlocked bride® | midwest + mountain west wedding inspiration

plan a modern wedding in the middle of the country

This traditional church wedding in Milwaukee has gorgeous vintage details and colors: Peach and cream, a refurbish mother’s dress, romantic hanging votives, and unique bridesmaid’s dresses. But hands down, the best detail of this entire wedding is the genuine perma-smile on the groom’s face. It is so evident how joyful and glad he is to be there with his equally sweet, yet more quietly excited bride.

From the Photographer:

Melinda and Patrick wed on a warm late fall day in Wisconsin. Their day was infused with personal touches, vintage, rustic and modern details and had an overall laid-back styling. Mindy’s dress was fashioned from her mother’s vintage wedding gown, reworked to fit her modern/vintage taste. The day was simply perfect!

This wedding is so precious I can’t stand it. To start there are the ladies getting ready in red flannel buttondowns while the groom is shaving. Then there’s the unconventional attire of both the bride and groom. Next we get the bride arriving on a boat to meet a teary eyed groom during the ceremony. Then we move on to koozies and decorated cups, toasts and homemade pie, s’mores and fireworks. The whole day seems so full of personality, fun, and true meaning for the bride and groom that I can’t help but love it.

From the Photographer:

There’s nothing quite like Wisconsin in the Fall so when my bride and groom told me that they were moving their wedding from Chicago to central Wisconsin I totally understood! Having grown up in the area, Erin got ready at a local lakefront cottage while her groom to be got ready at the Cambridge Country Club. After a few helping hands from her mom and girlfriends to get into her dress Erin was off to meet her Dad on the pier where he would escort her via boat to her ceremony site. Surrounded by Fall foliage and close childhood friends, Erin tried to keep Brad’s cheeks dry by wiping away tears of happiness during their vows. How quickly we sometimes forget just how emotional these events can be! Immediately following the ceremony guests were greeted with custom coozys that the couple had created for guests as a keepsake. Their casual backyard shindig actually felt quite intimate and soon everyone was led into a white airy tent that would house them for the next few hours under the stars. This made way for some exuberant toasts and homemade pies after dinner. Just when things started to get a bit more rowdy, fireworks (courtesy of Erin’s dad) sprung from the sky and with that Erin and Bradley’s wedding day was official!

So, most couples, if they have a ceremony exit, choose something pretty tame like bubbles, (biodegradable!) confetti, rose petals, etc. Melissa and Matt, on the other hand, had a marching band. How fun is that? Their bridal party and the couple themselves also seem like rambunctious, fun loving people (check out that cake topper!), and this wedding had me smiling throughout all the images, both sweet and playful.

This bride and groom had beautiful lakeside, nautical Wisconsin wedding. Although it rained the morning of their wedding day, the ceremony couldn’t have been more perfect, and was full of so many personal touches. And one way to get rid of those pre-ceremony jitters? Why not have a boat cruise with your bridal party BEFORE the ceremony… yup, that’s one way to do it.  ix81k1v5dQV6jgkHRRJ6x4do66yaZ1HRfuswswm3LiE,VW_9MR55CZfZcoL07uWziBYWZD8Wl26Q6pApzZcZCcI From the Bride

Patrick and I met online in 2009. After 3 years of dating, Patrick proposed while we were on vacation in August of 2012. We live in Chicago but decided on Lake Geneva, Wisconsin for a wedding venue. We wanted to be outside and close to the water if possible. I’ve always been obsessed with sailboats and all things nautical. Patrick and I spent a lot of our dating time near and on the water so a nautical themed wedding was perfect for us! When we found the outside venue at Abbey Springs overlooking the lake it was perfect! The whole weekend was us, from the rehearsal dinner boat cruise, the anchor beer glass favors, the invitations and the ceremony. Our wedding ceremony was perfect, especially given that it had rained all day. But by the time the ceremony started, it was a gorgeous evening! Our ceremony was very personal, my uncle was our officiant and close family and friends participated in different ways. My oldest friend (from preschool) and his wife sang “I Won ’t Give Up” by Jason Mraz during the ceremony. The little details of our wedding were some of my favorite parts. My mom and I spent months before the wedding looking for the perfect vases, ribbons and chalkboards for our decor. We used Pinterest and wedding blogs to help come up with some great phrases for our chalkboards as well as the table centerpieces.

One of the best parts of our day was after the first look and wedding party pictures, when we all boarded an old wooden boat to transport us to the ceremony. It was such a fun and relaxing way to spend the hour before the ceremony. We were able to cool off from the heat, have a glass of champagne, and relax with our closest family and friends. We put some great music on the boat speakers and started the celebration! It was a great way to calm my nerves and relax before the whirlwind that was the ceremony and reception! The ceremony was wonderful and went off without a hitch! During the exchange of the rings I was so nervous that I put the ring on the wrong hand! The groomsmen quickly corrected me and we solved the problem after some laughter from the guests. The rest of the evening was filled with wonderful food and drinks, as well as toasts and then we all danced the night away! It rained again during dancing which just cooled everything off! The guys snuck away for some cigars on the balcony overlooking the lake after the rain stopped. Overall it was an amazing day. We are so grateful to our amazing family and friends as well as our vendors who helped make the day possible!

From the Bride:

How Amanda & Mike met?  A mutual friend set us up after Mike saw me at the grocery store.

How Mike proposed? Mike proposed to me in Mercer, WI last summer.  My boss said we could use his cabin and fishing boat for the weekend.  Mike knows I love to fish and the cabin is located on Long Lake.   To give you some background my Grandpa Wayne and I were really close.  He passed away about 6 years ago.  I looked up to him so much and we would stay up late nights eating pickled herring (it’s a Norwegian thingJ) and just talking.  I miss him and think of him every day.   My grandpa Wayne made me a tackle box with all of his old fishing lures and made a label on the tackle box with my name on it.   Unfortunately, Mike did not get to meet my grandpa, but I tell him stories about my grandpa all the time.  Mike and I went fishing that day in the very early morning.  We were casting and not getting any bites.  Mike usually sets up my pole for me with one of his lures.  After a while, Mike suggested I try one of my grandpa’s lures for good luck.  I was showing Mike the different lures my grandpa put in there to get his take on which one was good.  He told me to just pick a good old one so I did.  I gave it to Mike to put on my pole and he tied the ring on the lure.  He got down on one knee, handed it to me, and asked me to marry him.   I was very surprised and of course, I said yes!!

Favorite part of the day?  My favorite part of the day was the emotion in Mike’s face when I walked down the aisle.  All my nervousness went away when I saw him.  Second part was my Dad and my sister singing our first song.

Hardest part of planning?  Prioritizing what needs  to be done first.  Then, the little things you forget about closer to the date.

Advice for future brides?  The day will go by so fast to try to take a step back during every moment and look around and take it in.

Why you chose the venue you did?  It was such a beautiful, peaceful place.  It had so much opportunity to show your sense of style.  It was also more of a relaxing place, and we could camp there afterwards.

From the Bride-to-be:
This is our final year at Marquette University before graduating and getting married. So, we decided to meet on campus just before classes resumed and found some beautiful haunts for our engagement pictures. We wanted to celebrate our love and document some time in one of our favorite places before getting married and taking the next steps in life!
