plan a modern wedding in the middle of the country

Kerri wanted her wedding to have a modern vintage vibe, but with some flair. I’d say she nailed it. This purple and red extravaganza is classic, yet funky, traditional, yet personalized. The DIY details form the the scarves, to the centerpieces, the cake topper to the candy bar – each element is unique and adds so much personality to this wonderful affair. Throw in a hot pink jacket, tea-length dress and 2 pairs of wedding shoes in the mix, and prepare to be blown away.

From the bride:

One might ask, how do you write a short story about the best day of your life? I’m still pondering…

My vision was clear – A modern vintage vibe with flair. My wedding dress was the source, a Coffee Tulle Tea Length dress by Justin Alexander. Our favorite colors, red and purple made the vision perfectly pop. A lover of all things crafty, DIY projects were seen throughout the day. I crocheted scarves for the entire wedding party, made yarn pom pom cake topper and centerpieces, created a candy table display for the sweet tooth, wrapped ribbon head table chairs, and cupcake liner garland to show off of cupcake table display.

My favorite part of the day was the first dances, one with my husband and one with my dad. My husband, Jack, is well known for his pink jacket. It’s been around since college and makes an appearance at all major events, our wedding was no different.  Right before our first dance, I surprised him with a matching pink jacket for his wife!

Neither of us wanted to leave the dance floor, our world felt perfectly in place. On the other side, my dad, Rory, and I have spent the past few years bonding on the swing dance floor. It was only fitting that our father-daughter dance would be a swing dance. What a blast we had showing off our moves to our friends and family!

For those future brides, my advice is to slow down, relax, breathe, let it go, and enjoy….

Bright pops of color (just wait until you see the bridal party shoes) a little bit of vintage flair, a day starting at a magnificent cathedral and ending at a cozy art gallery – this wedding has a perfect combination of traditional and modern. One element that I love is that the bride chose a shorter veil. Typically in a ceremony venue as extravagant as the one they were married in, you see brides with long, cathedral or chapel length veils, and I love how this bride took the less traditional route and topped it off with a big chunky pearl necklace. Breathtaking. I also love that the dogs are captured during the getting ready shots, and especially that the whole family was involved in such a special aspect of the day before the bride walked down the asile.

From the Photographer
Megan and Joe are two optometrists with an eye for vintage-modern details. The bride, whose family is from the Midwest, wanted their families to enjoy both the vintage and modern flair that Denver has to offer, from a ceremony in the historic Cathedral Basilica to the art gallery space where they enjoyed their reception, Artwork Network. With those two ceremony and reception locations, they complemented the vintage and modern theme with vintage greys and colorful salmons and pinks.

I love that this couple chose their wedding date to fall on their 5 year anniversary. I love that this couple had a fall wedding but didn’t incorporate the typical fall wedding colors. I love that this couple got married in Wisconsin. I love that this couple shopped at thrift, antique and second hand shops to gather their wedding decor. I love that this couple incorporated a ‘fall’ themed wedding dessert. But what I love most is that this couple capped off their ceremony with a secret handshake. I think I’ve made it clear how much I love this wedding – from the color scheme to the flowers, the love in the photos and delicate decor, not to mention the adorable cardigan, I just love it all.

From the bride:
We met in the fall (5 years to the day of our wedding) and definitely wanted a fall wedding – but without the traditional autumn colors. With a lakefront ceremony, incorporating colors we liked more – blues & greens – worked perfectly. I had always loved the blue mason jars but wasn’t sure how difficult they would be to find – we stopped in every thrift/antique/secondhand store we passed and hit a few gold mines. We also discovered Fiestaware teacups and other glassware – and vintage Pez dispensers for our guests! Early on, I thought about incorporating apples into the overall look – caramel apples (so fall!) on the dessert table and dark red apples elsewhere. They went well with the deep red dahlias I envisioned (and got!) being the accent to all of our blues & greens. The florals were rounded out by the most lovely collection of succulents a bride could ask for. We wanted our ceremony to be personal & meaningful and asked my brother to officiate, our moms to read, and friends to sing and play music. We capped it off by sealing our vows with a secret handshake.

When I had gotten engaged, I remember my mother telling me that I should just take my old prom dress, dye it white, and wear it again for my wedding day. Back then I thought she was crazy, but now looking at the wedding of Julianna & Brandon, I realize that she was on to something. Although Julianna didn’t dye her dress, it was the same dress that she had worn to prom when Brandon, her now husband, was her date – and she couldn’t have made a better dress decision. Not only does this dress hold a special meaning from the course of their 10 year relationship, this dress looks amazing on her. This is only the start to the personalized details incorporated into this intimate winter wedding.

From the Photographer

It happened around Thanksgiving. They had been renovating their new generational home (it was her grandparents’ home) and had recently moved in when Brandon proposed to Julianna. They had been together for 10 years so it was really no surprise, but it had the culmination of all things meaningful to them: being together and having the blessing of their parents.

The wedding date itself came about by their very nature. They are both very vibrant, but private people. They love being with their families and friends, but prefer to keep things low key and personal. And so, with Thanksgiving tucked away, they set their wedding date for just a few weeks later.

Brandon & Julianna kept everything just how they felt most comfortable; they had parents, siblings, and 2 best friends at the ceremony along with the judge and wed in front of the fire place in the home she grew up in.

Julianna had her prom dress from high school altered to wear for her wedding day. Ironically, her and Brandon have a photo together in front of the same fireplace from yesteryears of high school. The jeweled bouquet was made by her mom with a plethora of brooches that she has.

After they were married, they stuck pizzas in the oven (homemade pizzas that Julianna had made earlier that day) and drank to their happiness.

Everything was pulled together by the bride, her mother, and her sister-in-law. The prom-turned-wedding dress was altered by her aunt, the bouquet put together by her mom, the decor by all of them, the location at her brother’s home, and makeup done herself. It was lovely in so many ways.

Edge painting can add a beautiful touch or a bold pop of color to your wedding invitations. Since so much importance is placed on the colors of your wedding – from bridesmaid dresses to flowers, linens to other day-of details, why not place the same importance on your wedding invitations. Your invitation is likely to be the first thing your guests see and truly sets the stage for what’s to come, what to expect, and what to look forward to. Edge painting is a wonderful technique because it can fit any wedding theme, any time of year. Add a pale green edge to match the look of your outdoor rustic wedding, a metallic gold edge that mimics the interior of your hotel reception venue, or a red edge detailing that showcases the party vibe in store for your New Years Eve reception – whatever the case, this is a detail that will get noticed, and will be remembered.

Do you plan on including this memorable, unique technique to your wedding invitation suite?

The pops of red, the balloons, the feathers, the beautiful couple, the outdoor setting and did I mention the pops of red? Katie & Alex’s photographer not only took some amazing photos but also perfectly describes the foundation, and inspiration for their wedding day. I’ll let her take it from here…

Katie and Alex married at Stonebridge Country Club this past July, and their wedding was a wonderful combination of elegance, opulence, and cheerfulness. From the feathered centerpieces, to the German beer tasting at each place setting, to the tiffany’s inspired color scheme, this wedding was full of amazing details. The chandelier Katie chose to hang as the ceremony centerpiece was darling. Katie and Alex met at a skate park in Arizona, and decided to utilize a skateboard as well as balloons for part of their portraits.

Alright. Don’t hate on me, but given that this girl doesn’t do Valentine’s Day, I opted to take today’s post a different direction. And, when our newest contributor, Tiffany, said she’s on the same page, it was like fate. I’m a sucker for jewel tones, and given that I’m fair skinned and blonde, I love this palette she pieced together. Take it away, Tiffany!

Emerald is not only the Pantone color of the year but it’s also a great accent color for your wedding. Emerald really shines in the midwest where sometimes the landscape is not quite as green — especially in the early spring and late fall and winter. Can you imagine a white winter wedding with emerald accents? Sounds pretty dreamy to me.

Plus, emerald pairs so well with other colors like: white, gold, pearl, navy, red. How can you not love it?

Neon was a huge trend of 2012.  Although we are yet to see how the trend will survive in 2013, one thing is for sure, this trend is one that gets noticed. From neon pumps, accessories galore and an opportunity to re-introduce our favorite 80′s crewneck, a pop of neon will make a statement any day, night and especially on the most important day of your life.

What are your thoughts on neon? Is it still a hot trend or fading fast?

Are any Landlocked brides’ planning on incorporating this bold trend into their wedding day?!

Well, it’s been a good four months since the last color palette…but, that’ll be no more! Stay tuned for more inspiring color palettes!

Now that we have the apologies out of the way, I’m excited to share today’s color board. If you were over on Oh Lovely Day! earlier this week, you will have had a sneak peek (see here).  I love metallics. But, in a different way than most. I love mixing it with really bold and bright colors.  Especially in the winter time, because everyone is expecting you to pair gold and silver with icy blues and soft pinks. Black is the perfect pair for gold.  But, as I told Chandra’s readers on Monday, it also pairs well with red, green, blue, pink, yellow, orange….the list goes on.

What’s your favorite color to pair with gold?

From hairstyles to clothing, the ombre trend seems to be gaining popularity everywhere you turn. When Gwen Stefani debut her pink ombre wedding gown in 2002, the trend was shocking, however 10 years later this trend is now an instant show stopper.  Weddings contain so many different details that this trend can carry on to each one of them. The ombre trend can start at your invitations and fade onto your wedding bouquet.  No matter what the color combination you have set for your wedding, the ombre trend is one that I don’t see fading away any time soon… pun intended.

Love the ombre trend or hate it? What do you think about this trend overall, as well as it’s influence on weddings?
