plan a modern wedding in the middle of the country

Personality and the Midwest always make me a happy girl – especially when it comes to weddings. Julie and Brian took their appreciation for The Great Gatsby to a new level, and embraced the beautiful Irwin Gardens Estate by reflecting it in their decor.

From the Bride:
Ever since reading The Great Gatsby in high school, I said I wanted my wedding to be like the garden parties in the book and Irwin Gardens is the perfect setting for this. With both of us being from Columbus and Brian studying architecture, it is even more ideal. We wanted something that was elegant but still relaxed and intimate.

I love to combine older and modern elements so the wedding really reflected this. My dress was perfect for me and for Irwin Gardens- it really has an classic feel to it so I wanted to add the modern blue shoe as a contrast.

All the paper products were a modern Portuguese tile design because we got engaged in Lisbon.

The centerpieces were mostly vintage bottles, jars, vases and doilies which work really well in an historic setting. The mix of different flowers gave the reception the laid-back feel we wanted.

My mom and I made most of the cake stands which featured Paris because Brian and I will be going there for our honeymoon. Our cake table itself was pretty modern and we added photos of our parents and grandparents.

Every detail of the ceremony and reception really reflected Brian and me, even if it was subtle, which I love. The color scheme was more by accident; we were originally going to mix metallics but that proved a little difficult with the printed materials, cake, and flowers. Mustard yellow and charcoal grey really lend themselves to a fall wedding without being outright autumn colors.

We wanted a very autumn wedding but having it outdoors was a little stressful because of Indiana weather’s constant changes. I knew the day would go well when the sun reappeared right before the ceremony began. Throughout the engagement, everyone warned me that something would go wrong the day-of and to not worry about it but actually nothing went wrong the whole day!

Favorite moment? Brian and I really wanted our wedding to not be just about us but also be about the people around us. During the cocktail hour, one of our groomsmen pulled me aside to tell me to stop moving around and take everything in. Standing on the back porch of the inn, looking towards the gardens and seeing all of our family and friends was my favorite moment.

Funniest moment? When one of the flower girls, Molly, 3 years old, saw Brian and all of the groomsmen in the gardens, she asked them, “What are you all doing here at MY wedding?!”

First dance song? “Better Together” by Jack Johnson and Paula Fuga

Most romantic moment? Out of the entire day, I really think the most romantic part was saying our vows and knowing we were committing the rest of our lives to each other.

Favorite detail of the day? Lighting! Throughout planning, the main thing I concentrated on was lighting- we had chandeliers in trees (the one thing I really wanted), lanterns throughout the gardens, up lighting by Maddox Entertainment, string lights and a chandelier in the tent. The tent chandelier was on loan from a close family friend who told me towards the end of the night that Brian and I could have it so that every time we looked at it, we would be reminded of our first dance.

Advise for brides planning? Book vendors early! I had been in a lot of weddings so when Brian proposed, we already knew almost everyone we wanted and booked all of them within a month. It made everything else so easy and our engagement was not consumed by just wedding planning.
