plan a modern wedding in the middle of the country

Groom’s cake are a bit of a Southern tradition, so us Midwesterners and any of you West Coasters and New Englanders may not be too familiar with the idea.

Here’s a little background (thanks to the Wedding Channel):  The Groom’s cake is an American South tradition, intended to be a gift from the bride to the groom.  It can often take the shape of just about anything, or come in the form of a cheesecake, chocolate cake or pie (amongst other things).

More recently, the idea of fun cakes that reflect a hobby or profession of the Groom have gained popularity, thanks in part to shows like Ace of Cakes.

Patty Cakes

(Had to give a nod to the FI’s occupation, of course).

I love the idea of featuring something different for the groom’s cake if you are doing one. Something other than cake. It gives guests an alternative to cake, because let’s face it. Not everyone likes cake (not sure how that is possible).

I heart croquembouches. A lot. Probably because I like puff pastries. A lot.

BUT, how can you not love this twist on the croquembouche?

Um, heck yes. Donut croquembouche alternative. They had a cake and the donut tree-cake.  How awesome?!

We keep tossing the idea around of having a grooms cake, but that’s a lot of cake at one wedding!  Are you going to have a grooms cake? Does your groom want something different or a fun-shaped cake?

  1. We are doing a groom’s cake for sure. We are debating between cheesecake or several varieties of cheesecake bites. I am trying to convince him to consider gooey butter as a choice…not sure if he will go for it or not though.

  2. When planning my wedding, I gave this a lot of thought and it unfortunately got cut because of our budget. In my case, my husband LOVES Ted Drewes custard so I wanted to have cups of their custard with hot fudge (one of his favorites) in an ice cream cart. Not very practical, couldn’t get it to work out without blowing the budget…gave up on the idea. *sigh* If I could do it all over again I would definitely find a way to make it work!

  3. I feel horrible! My husband wanted a basketball cake, and I wouldn’t let him. Seriously, insisted that he couldn’t have it!!! Does that make me a little controlling??

Haha! Doesn’t make you controlling….not all weddings have room for a basketball cake!

You should have made a nod to the epic Groom’s cake of all time…the armadillo cake from Steel Magnolias!

I went to a wedding a couple years ago where there were about half a dozen cheesecakes (in various flavors) in addition to the wedding cake. It gave the guests a lot of variety, and looked beautiful encircling the base of the wedding cake.

Grooms cakes are unheard of over here (England), and I think if I allowed the much beloved to have his own cake he would expect that he would be the only one that could eat it…. It would be like the episode of Friends where Joey explains that he doesn’t share food.

  7. Love that blue & White cake…and SUCH a cute groom’s cake!

We both wanted a “funky” cake so we are having a pink and white madhatter style cake:

For the rehearsal, there is not enough people to warrant a cake, so I’m having cookies made as favors…Half of them will be girly (pink and white dresses) and the other half will be NY Yankee themed…he doesn’t know about that little detail yet!

@Amy – Not sure the FI would get it (don’t think he’s seen the movie). I would love to do cheesecake, but the FI doesn’t like cheesecake (what?).

@Lisa G – Hah! I don’t blame him for wanting the cake to himself!!

@Jen – Cute idea for the rehearsal dinner!
